About Us
The New Mexico State Society of Washington, DC (NMSS) was founded in 1987 by New Mexicans serving Members of Congress on Capitol Hill under the charter of the National Conference of State Societies. In 1993, the group became a non-profit corporation registered in the District of Columbia with a purpose to promote unity and fellowship among New Mexicans living in the Washington, DC area.
Twenty years after our founding, our state society continues to grow as more and more New Mexicans learn about the benefits of membership. Today, we reach hundreds of New Mexicans living and working throughout the National Capital region.
NMSS is an all-volunteer organization with officers elected annually. The Board of Directors meets several times per year to plan and organize events for NMSS members to enjoy. Our board is comprised of a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, three At-Large Directors and five Congressional Directors representing New Mexico's two U.S. Senators and three members of the House of Representatives. Our honorary members include the members of the New Mexico Congressional delegation.
Our events include several networking happy hours and other social events, the Cherry Blossom Reception, our outing to the Virginia Gold Cup and our annual Christmas party. In 2009, the NMSS hosted the "Land of Enchantment Inaugural Ball" at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian. Hundreds of New Mexicans attended the event in honor of 56th Presidential Inaugural.
